vl: on the virtues of vanlife

i’ve decided to do van life after i realized i can’t stop watching those damn youtube videos

i surmise here why my psyche finds it captivating:

  1. i practiced nomadic mindset. for the majority of my time in uni, i’ve exclusively sublet and lived in new places for 4-8 month periods. i got to try out new buildings, neighborhoods, and interact with new roommates. over my uni years, i’ve honed art of essentializing my belongings. more broadly i usually love new experiences. van life is basically essentialism and adventure on steroids. also when mongolians conqurered korea, they spread their nomadic genes which i suspect is bubbling within me. this lifestyle is inline with ‘goonwarrior’ themes of this chronicle.
  2. i love nature and get depressed indoors. especially in places that look clinically sterile and devoid of character — (fuck u brutalism) just design for mass habitation. i hit my snapping point in my freshman year’s student housing. it’s ironic that i like the purity of bauhaus but hate the massive sterility of brutalism. i think designing a space that has charm will alleviate indoor depression and its smallness will force me to spend more time outdoors even when i feel lazy.
  3. i love full control of design decisions. as trained engineer, i get to be as nerdy as i want when designing a microcosmic system that reflect my values.

now aside from the adventure most people seem to do it in for environmental causes or to skip out on rent in this stupid real estate bubble, but to me all that is happy side effects.
